Best Flights commenced trading in February 2001 and by 2005 had established itself as the largest independent travel company in the Southern Hemisphere. In September 2005 the company was purchased by Transonic Travel, whose origins date back to 1949 and who employs over 1,000 personnel around the world. In July 2006 Transonic Travel was in turn purchased by the public company, S8, which then created the largest travel-related company in the Southern Hemisphere, with a capitalisation in excess of AUD$500 million.

In January 2007, S8 was purchased by the investment and funds management company MFS Limited. MFS are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. MFS Limited currently has a market capitalisation of around $2 billion and manages over $3 billion of assets on behalf of its shareholders and 40,000-plus investors.
