On Travelmarvel's 28 day Classical Europe cruise aboard the ms AmaLegro for 14 nights and explore Italy. This tour starts in Rome and finishes in Amsterdam.
Day 1. Arrive Rome.
On arrival in Rome, be met at the airport and taken to join your Small Group Tour. Tonight enjoy a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2. Rome Sightseeing.
On a locally-guided tour, be dazzled by sites such as the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
Day 3. Rome Sightseeing.
Visit the Vatican Museum and see some of the world’s greatest works of art, including the painted ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Then head out of the city for a tour of the Catacombs of Rome.
Day 4. Rieti, Spoleto, Assisi, Perugia.
This morning travel the scenic route along the Via Salaria (the ancient salt route). Stop in at the town of Rieti as well as Spoleto, home to the hilltop Albornozian Castle. Later, in Assisi, see the 13th century Basilica of St Francis, before arriving in the medieval walled town of Perugia.
Day 5. San Gimignano, Siena, Volterra.
After breakfast, travel to Tuscany and visit San Gimignano, one of Tuscany’s best medieval towns. Then head to Siena and visit places such as the Palazzo Pubblico and the Piazza del Campo, arguably Italy’s most beautiful arena. Later, arrive in the hilltop town of Volterra.
Day 6. Florence.
Today enjoy a short, yet dramatic, drive to Florence. Here, a tour includes sites such as the Ponte Vecchio, Duomo Cathedral, Uffizi Gallery and Santa Croce – the burial place of such people as Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. After the tour, return to Volterra.
Day 7. Pisa, Lucca.
Journey to ancient Pisa and see the Leaning Tower. View the adjoining cathedral, Baptistry and the decorated Campo Santo, before heading to the walled city of Lucca. Enjoy a tour here, including the quirky Torre Guinigi.
Day 8. Cinque Terre.
From Lucca, travel to the Italian Riviera and explore its coastline, including the five villages that make up the Cinque Terre.
Day 9. Ravenna, Venice.
Take to Italy’s back roads on an alpine drive over the Apennine Mountains to Ravenna. See its eight World Heritage-listed sights and 5th and 6th century mosaics, then continue to the grand city of Venice. Here, enjoy a vaporetto ride to your hotel on Venice Island.
Day 10. Venice Sightseeing.
Today immerse yourself in Venice on a guided walking tour. Stroll through St Mark’s Square, visit the gleaming Basilica and view the Campanile (bell tower). You’ll also visit the famous Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge.
Day 11. Verona, Lake Como.
Leaving Venice, head to Verona. On a tour, see the colossal Roman amphitheatre, the Arena, the picturesque Piazza delle Erbe, the Madonna Verona fountain and Toer Lamberti. Then enter the lakes region of northern Italy.
Day 12. Lake Como at Leisure.
With today at leisure, relax and be captivated by beautiful Lake Como. Or perhaps take an optional excursion into Switzerland to the lakeside town of Lugano (own expense).
Day 13. Como, Milan.
En route to Milan, visit the historic town of Como. On arrival in Milan, take a tour of the city and see sights including the famed La Scala museum.
Day 14. Milan, Budapest, Embark Ship.
This morning after breakfast fly to Budapest. Be met on arrival and transfer to the MS AmaLegro.
Day 15. Budapest Sightseeing.
Following breakfast, join a sightseeing tour of Budapest. Visit 500 year-old Matthias Church, the distinctive Fisherman’s Bastion, the Royal Palace and Buda Castle.
Day 16. Bratislava.
Relax this morning as you cruise to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Upon arrival, disembark and join a walking tour, taking in the key landmarks of this intriguing city.
Day 17. Vienna.
Disembark in Vienna this morning and enjoy a walking tour of this historic city.
Day 18. Durnstein, Melk.
This morning stop in Durnstein for a guided tour and a wine tasting. At lunch, continue to Melk for a tour of Melk Abbey.
Day 19. Linz, Passau.
Cruise past Linz and on to Passau. Disembark for a tour of this historic city. Alternatively, join an optional tour to Salzburg and its ‘Sound of Music’ sights (own expense).
Day 20. Regensburg.
Arrive in Regensburg, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the city’s architectural highlights. Alternatively, take an optional tour to Weltenburg Abbey (own expense).
Day 21. Nuremberg.
Today, visit a number of Nuremberg’s World War II sites on a guided tour.
Day 22. Bamberg.
Disembark just outside of Bamberg and travel by coach into this enchanting town, where you’ll tour the city’s serpentine streets.
Day 23. Kitzingen, Wurzburg.
After breakfast, arrive in Kitzingen and enjoy a walking tour through this pretty town. Then continue to Wurzburg and disembark for a tour of this charming city.
Day 24. Wertheim, Miltenberg.
Arrive in Wertheim and enjoy time to look around. Then travel by coach to Freudenberg, where you’ll rejoin the ship. During lunch, cruise to Miltenberg. On arrival, enjoy a tour of this lovely Franconian town.
Day 25. Rudesheim, Koblenz.
Today arrive in Rudesheim, where a mini-train will take you to Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum. Later, cruise through the Rhine Gorge on perhaps the most beautiful stretch of the Rhine. After dinner this evening, perhaps take an evening stroll through Koblenz.
Day 26. Koblenz, Cologne.
Today cruise from Koblenz to Cologne and enjoy a tour of this magnificent city.
Day 27. Cologne, Amsterdam.
Arrive in Amsterdam and join a canal boat cruise in a glass-top boat. Admire 17th century homes, charming churches and 16th century merchant houses. Return to your ship for the Captain’s Gala Farewell Dinner.
Day 28. Disembark Ship, Depart Amsterdam.
This morning following breakfast, you’ll disembark the ship and be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
