Tour Details - a. 2 Day Yellow Water, Art Sites & Arnhem Land (Bgt); Aurora Kakadu 12/13

Day 1. Nourlangie Rock Art, Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Yellow Water Billabong Cruise
Departing Darwin this morning, travel to World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park which, as Australia’s largest national park, covers some 20,000 square kilometres. Call in at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre near Cooinda to gain an insight into the cultural significance the park holds for its traditional owners. Join a guided cruise on Kakadu’s famous wetland area, Yellow Water billabong, keeping a lookout for crocodiles and birds. Then travel to Nourlangie Rock to view a variety of ancient Aboriginal rock art. The name ‘Nourlangie’ is an anglicised version of Nawurlandja. The most famous rock art picture at Nourlangie is Namondjok, and for some Aboriginal groups he is a Creation Ancestor who now lives in the sky and can be seen only at night, when he appears as a dark spot in the Milky Way galaxy. The unique x-ray style works record the culture and evolution of the people over the past 40,000 years.

Day 2. Arnhem Land by 4WD, Mikinj Valley
Journey across the East Alligator River into Arnhem Land, one of Australia’s most remote and least traversed regions. With special permission from the Manilakarr people, travel to the rarely visited Mikinj Valley. You’ll see places inaccessible to most. Hear of traditional land ownership, learn bush skills of hunting and gathering and how to prepare bush tucker. View Aboriginal art in its natural state. Most tours are led or accompanied by an Aboriginal guide. On the return journey to Darwin stop in at the Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine overlooking the floodplains. Return to Darwin where the tour ends.

Injalak Arts and Craft Association is visited only on weekdays. Injalak is not open weekends and public holidays and may be closed for cultural reasons. If Injalak is closed you will visit Cannon Hill and Hawk Dreaming in Kakadu instead. This alternative also applies when seasonal flooding and tides prevent crossing the East Alligator River.
